Korean President Jae-in Moon attended the 2017 Muju WTF World Taekwondo Championships.
Upon receiving a wide welcome from the audience, President Moon received the International Taekwondo Federation’s Demonstration Team with warmth. “I’ve heard that there is a WTF Demonstration Team’s visit in planning to the event in Pyeongyang this September hosted by the ITF,” said the President.
The Opening Ceremony of the 23rd Muju WTF World Taekwondo Championships was held on June 24 at 5 pm in the T1 Arena, Taekwondowon, Muju.
Many spectators went out of the arena to greet the recently inaugurated President as his attendance to the event has been known to the public.
President Moon, who arrived with the Speaker of the National Assembly Sye-kyun Chung, Minister of the Culture, Sport and Tourism Jong-hwan Do and Minister of Interior Bu-gyeom Kim, shook IOC Member Ung Chang’s hands and gave his congratulatory address.
He said, “today, it must have been one of the longest trips to the shortest trip. I sincerely welcome IOC Member Ung Chang, ITF President Yong-sun Rhee and the rest ITF Demonstration Team on visit to the Republic of Korea for peace and harmony in Korean Peninsula. As Shilla and Baekjae became one in Muju, WTF and ITF are as one today as much as I wish the North and South to become a single Korea, and be the only Korea in the world. I wish all the successes of taekwondo may be continued through the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. I ask IOC Member Ung Chang for interest and cooperation, and the Republic of Korea promises to actively support to its fullest extent.”
President Moon also emphasized the role of WTF in its contribution to world peace through its activities with the refugee camps, and said, “the taekwondo family is contributing to the peace, coexistence and human development. I especially thank the WTF for its cause to global harmony and peace. WTF established the Humanitarian Foundation to help the youth from the refugee camps, disaster ridden areas and developing countries to dream. It was acknowledged by IOC President Thomas Bach as an excellent international sport organization. I hope that the friendly game between Israel and Palestine in planning will ensure taekwondo will step up to world peace.”
After the ITF Demonstration had ended, President Moon went down to the area of play to personally greet the members of the demonstration team, and left his autography on a prepared dobok with the message, “person comes first.”
It has been worth noting that the children’s choir received a special attention when they had yelled, “Mr. President, here!” The President turned around from leaving to greet the children and take a commemorative photo.
While WTF had adjusted its schedule for the Opening Ceremony after the President’s attendance had been confirmed on June 20, his participation has left a great impact on the public.
Meanwhile, the President visit to the World Taekwondo Championships was the first time after President Young-sam Kim’s attendance at the National Sport Festival in 1994.
