At the 2017 Muju World Taekwondo Championships held in the home country of the Korean National team, both Korean male and female athletes reclaimed their victory.
In the men's division, the game was focused on getting points with Russia, whereas in the women's division, Turkey and Serbia were engaged in a heated game for victory. But, the championship cup went to the Korean national team for both men's and women's divisions for the first time since the Puebla World Taekwondo Championships.
Since June 24th,971athletes and 796 executives from 183 countries around the world attendedthe "2017 Muju World Taekwondo Championships" held at the Muju Taekwondowon T1 Stadium for sevendays.
For Korean athletes, in the men's division, Kim Tae hun(Suwon City Hall) in the 54kg weight class won the games three consecutive times, Jeong Yun jo(Kyunghee University) in the 58kg weight class was the unexpected gold medalist, Lee Dae hun(Korea Gas Corporation) in the 68kg weight class won the World Taekwondo Championships’ gold medal for the third time.
In the women's division, thanks to the outstanding performance of Shim Jae-young(Korea National Sport University) in the 46kg weight class and Lee A reum(Goyang City Hall), who defeated Jade Jones of England, for the first time since the Puebla World Taekwondo Championships, both the men's and women's divisions could accomplish victory.
Also, Oh Hye ri(Chuncheon City Hall) won the silver medal in the 73kg weight class and In Gyo don(Korea Gas Corporation) in the 87kg weight class, Kim So hee(Samsung S1) in the 62kg weight class, Kim Jan di(Yongin University) in the 67kg weight class, and Ahn Se bom(Chuncheon City Hall) in the unlimited weight class received bronze medals.
In the women's division, Kim So hee in the 49kg weight class, who has challenged the World Taekwondo Championships for the third time failed to proceed to the next round to place for a medal because she lost points due to the referee’s bad call giving her minus points before the end of the third round in the quarterfinal match with Wenren Yuntao from China.
At the Muju World Taekwondo Championships this year, the Korean team could attain some achievements through the onsite video power analyzing system, which was introduced for the first time, but this also meant that Korean male athletes in the middle weight class received homework to enhance their athletic performance.
In the men's division, trailing Korea's 67 points was Russia in second with 62 points, and the winning country in the previous competition, Iran recorded a total of 46 points taking the third place. In the women's division, following Korea’s 63 points was Turkey that won two gold medals and scored 62 points, and Serbia, also winning two gold medals took the third place with a total score of 38.
Korean female athlete Lee A reum and the Nigerian Issoufou Abdoul in the unlimited weight class were selected as Women’s and Men’s Most Valuable Player of the Championships.
In addition, Korea’s national team's coach, Jeon Mun-hui, won the best coach award in the men's division, and Serbia’s national team's coach, Dragan Jovic, won the best coach award in the women's division.
Meanwhile, "2017 Muju World Taekwondo Championships”, which was held in the largest scale ever, the opening ceremony was attended by South Korean President Moon Jae in, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Do Jong-hwan, and the International Olympic Committee(IOC)’s chairperson Jang Wung.
In particular, a model team from the International Taekwondo Federation(ITF) visited Korea and performed amazing block breaking demonstration simulating real fight situations, and there was the first ever refugee athlete to take part in this competition, making this competition particularly significant.
Furthermore, President of the IOC, Thomas Bach, attended the closing ceremony on the 30thof the last month.
As with the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony also had demonstrations by the World Taekwondo Federation and the International Taekwondo Federation, which included participation of a group consisting of mixed gender team’s demonstration between Spain and the USA.
The next World Taekwondo Championships is planned to be held in Manchester, England in 2019.
