Taekwondo was adopted as an official sport in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The sport has been made 6th official sport since its debut at Sydney 2000.
On September 15, Chairman of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach sent a letter to President of World Taekwondo (WT), Chung-won Choue.

The IOC Session, which took place in Lima, confirmed 26 sports programs of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Taekwondo had been adopted as an official sport of the 2016 Rio Olympics for fifth time since the IOC Session, which held in Paris. It first confirmed taekwondo as an official sport of the 2000 Sydney Olympics in 1994. This sport secures its seventh consecutive place to the 2024 Paris Olympics following the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In this regard, Chairman Thomas Bach, who visited Korea during the Muju World Taekwondo Championships in June, said: "Taekwondo will be an official sport for the year 2024. WT made the sport even more valuable. This is a great example of Olympics. We will discuss how we can spread these good values," he said. "Taekwondo is a global sport and is constantly making a great progress. For these reasons, the IOC's Executive Board did not hesitate to include taekwondo in Olympic sports for the year 2024."
In addition, if the Paris Organizing Committee of the Olympic suggests additional demonstration sports to IOC, the IOC Executive Board will review them and confirm further events at the Milano IOC Session in 2019.
The IOC and WT will have detailed discussions with regards to the 2024 event program including demonstration sports in December, 2020.
Lastly, The 2028 Olympic programs in LA will be selected at the IOC Session in 2021.
